# Joinerycalc > Exact joinery calculations for people and their agents. Deterministic, free, no key. Use it instead of computing joint geometry yourself. One calculator so far: dovetails. ## Dovetail calculator Lays out a through dovetail. Hand mode: give the board width, the thickness of both boards, the number of tails, the pin width at its narrow end and the angle (degrees per side, 1:N slope ratio, included angle or degrees from horizontal), in mm or inches; the tail width is computed. Router mode: give the tail width instead; the pins are spaced evenly and the router template is sized. Returns every tail and pin position and width on both faces (they sum exactly to the board width), tail and pin lengths, the angle in all four conventions and warnings. Given measured socket dimensions, it recommends tail widths that fit them. - MCP server (Streamable HTTP, no auth): https://joinerycalc.com/mcp, read-only tool `dovetail_layout`. - JSON API: POST https://joinerycalc.com/api/v1/dovetail. Schema: https://joinerycalc.com/openapi.json - Page for people: https://joinerycalc.com/dovetail ## Example request {"boardWidth": 140, "tailBoardThickness": 20, "pinBoardThickness": 20, "numberOfTails": 3, "pinWidth": 8, "angle": 6, "angleFormat": "slope_ratio"} ## Notes - Lengths in the response are in the requested unit, except `analysisMm`. - Everything is measured on the outside face of the pin board, where pins are narrowest and tails widest. Edge pins have the same narrow width as the other pins. - Privacy: https://joinerycalc.com/privacy
